Marines with Marine Aircraft Group 13 effectively communicated with air station assets throughout southern California utilizing organic equipment from exercise Northern Lightning at Volk Field Counter Land Training Center, Camp Douglas, Wis., August 16.
Sam Folsom, born July 24, 1920 in Quincy, Massachusetts, was one of the first echelon of 17 Marine fighter pilots with Marine Fighter Squadron (VMF) 121 tasked with defending Guadalcanal. He is also one of the last living Marine Corps WWII combat pilot.
Marines from units across 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing provided assets and personnel during Northern Lightning 18-2, a joint training exercise at Volk Field Counterland Training Center, Camp Douglas, Wis. Aug. 13-24.
On August 13, 1918, Pvt. Opha May Johnson became the first in a line of just over 300 women to join the United States Marine Corps. Today, exactly 100 years later, women are continuing that legacy, helping the Marine Corps progress in leaps and bounds.
